While in BCIT’s Broadcast and Online Journalism program, I reported on a variety of stories varying from African drumming events during Black History Month to the UBC Men’s Soccer Team that had an undefeated 2025-2026 regular season. I produced 1:30-minute to 2:00-minute-long reporter packages for BCIT News.
Capilano University African Drumming
Ambleside Pay Parking Impact
Capilano University hosted various events during Black History Month to honour Black culture and its rich history. One of the university’s events was an African Drumming Workshop that included dancing, drumming and singing. The event was hosted by Edward Sembatya, a drumming instructor from Uganda, who prides himself on educating others through various forms of music. Students at the workshop say Sembatya has a great style of teaching which makes the course immersive, engaging and simply fun.
The district of West Vancouver introduced pay parking lots to beaches, parks and fields at Ambleside. The implementation has an impact on park user, beach goers, athletes and coaches such as Nicole Page-Newman, a volunteer high school field hockey manager. She is forced to pay each time she comes down to volunteer at Ambleside’s Rutledge field. Nearby street parking remains free, causing many drivers to park outside businesses instead. Maureen O’Brien, the Executive Director of the Ambleside and Dundarave BIA, says this is a bigger problem for businesses than COVID-19.
UBC Men’s Thunderbirds Soccer
SFU All-American Women’s Track Athletes
The UBC men’s soccer team had a historic 2025-2026 regular season, finishing the year undefeated with a 15-0-1 record. The Thunderbirds became the first the first team in the Canada West Division to not lose in a 16-game season. Head Coach Mike Mosher and defender Eric Lajeunesse talked about the team’s success and the winning culture Mosher has built at UBC during his tenure.
Emma Cannnan is a junior short-distance track athlete from SFU who became an All-American for the first time in the NCAA GNAC Indoor Championship last March. She finished in third place in both the 200 metre sprint and the 4 x 400 metre relay in Bellingham, Washington in 2025. Her sprint coach, Tom Dickson, says her work ethic and attitude on the track are instrumental in her success.
Local Artists in Vancouver
Metro Vancouver Drinking Water Management Plan
Suzanne Summersgill is a local artist from Vancouver who paints outside of her studio, which is located in her home. She has been painting since she was a little kid, but with expenses being higher than ever before, it is becoming more and more difficult. Ellie Chung, a Gallery Manager for the Federation of Canadian Artists, says local artists need more support from organizations and the community.
At Global News, I worked on a story about Metro Vancouver’s Drinking Water Management Treament Plan for the next decade. Metro Van made the documents available to the public to receive feedback on their plan, which would later be implemented. I interviewed Linda Parkinson, Metro Vancouver Director of Policy and Planning, and helped gather visuals for the TV story. It was aired on various Global News segments throughout the day, including ‘Global at 5 p.m. with Sophie Lui’.
